Geneva Vessels

Geneva was born July 29, 1917 to Fred Robert and Effie Mae Locklin Shavers. She was reared near San Gabriel in Milam County and graduated from Thorndale High School.

In 1936 Geneva married William Bland Schwartz IV of Austin and has made her home in Austin for the past 36 years.

Their union produced two children, Mrs. Peggy Joyce Holt of Nacogdoches, and William Bland Schwartz V of Austin, and they both survive her. Her husband, Bill, preceded her in death in 1947.

Geneva later married James Howard Knowles and was blessed with a daughter, Jeannie Murphette Davis of Houston. Jeannie also survives her. Mr. Knowles passed away in 1949 shortly after the birth of their daughter.

In 1954 Geneva married Jay Richard Vessels, a long time friend and co-worker. They established a home on Lake Austin where they loved to entertain family and friends. After the death of Colonel Vessels in 1970, Geneva continued to maintain her home on Lake Austin until failing health forced her to make other living arrangements.

Geneva was retired from the Texas Department of Human Resources where she was director of office management. During her 35 years of employment with the State of Texas, Geneva was associated with several agencies including the Department of Heath and Texas Fish and Game Commission.

In addition to her three children, Geneva is survived by two stepsons, Roger and Richard Vessels of Minnesota, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Dr. Gordon Smith of Riverbend Church will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 PM Sunday at Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 N. Lamar in Austin.

Interment will follow in the Locklin Cemetery near San Gabriel -- a family cemetery established in 1844. Mrs. Vessels will be laid to rest among many descendants, including her beloved mother and grandparents.
