Melvin was born in 1911 to Jesse Lee Cook and Maude MaryAnn McDaniel. He was their only child when they divorced. They remarried years later and had more sons. His mother Maude married Raymond Seaman (m. 1914 IA) later Raymond and Maude divorced and Maude remarried Jesse.
His Siblings were; Orville, Florence , Glenn and Floyd Seaman, Everett , Ivan. Jess and Leo Cook.
After his mother's divorce from Raymond, Melvin dropped out of school in 8th grade to work and help his mother with finances.
Later, it was his father Jess, that made arrangements for Melvin to take Mildred out on their first date that lead to their marriage in 1930.
He began his married life with Mildred Lillian Goreham in 1930. Melvin did farming work and they raised their family on their farm. They had six children, although they lost one son(Ronald b. 1936) as a baby. From their remaining five children they gained fifteen grandchildren starting in the 1950's, and later great grandchildren.
The farm had many loud and warm gatherings of family over the years.
He shared 55 years of marriage with Mildred when she passed. He lived an additional nine years that he spent continuing to bring family together.
