June Phelps McKenna Bonfield

1923 - 2018

June Phelps McKenna Bonfield November 13, 1923 – January 30, 2018 Resident of Menlo Park June Phelps McKenna Bonfield was born in Washington, DC on November 13, 1923 to free-lance writers Grace Phelps and Esmond Desmond Patrick Fitzgerald Plunket McKenna. June was sent to several boarding and "progressive" schools and camps and then attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. After serving in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II, she was discharged in 1945 and married Andrew Bonfield. Relocating to California, June earned a BS in 1949 and a Certificate in Occupational Therapy in 1950 from the University of Southern California. The couple then moved to Palo Alto where June worked with the blind at the Veterans Administration until she obtained a divorce in 1956 and became an elementary school teacher at the Peninsula School in Menlo Park. A devoted Episcopalian, June felt called to deeper church service and enrolled at St. Margaret's House, the separate school for women at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. She was posted to church work camps in Mexico and as an Episcopal chaplain to the University of Texas, San Marcos, from 1959 to 1964. June then earned a PhD in Medieval Literature in 1969 from the University of Texas, Austin, and joined the English faculty at North Dakota State University, retiring in 1986. Moving back to the Peninsula, first in Sunnyvale and then at Lytton Gardens in Palo Alto, she joined All Saints Church, Palo Alto, and finally Christ Church, Portola Valley. June had a brilliant and inquisitive mind and pursued studies in Latin, Greek, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, theology, archeology, astronomy and art in addition to literature. She sang in church choirs wherever she lived. Until her death, she continued to instruct her nurses, doctors and caregivers in correct English grammar and syntax. In declining health, June moved in 2014 from Lytton Gardens to Jasmine's Cozy Cottage, a small board and care home in Menlo Park. There she received 24-hour loving attention from her caregivers and members of her Home-Based Primary Care Team from the Palo Alto Veterans Administration until her peaceful death on January 30 at age 94. She is survived by her cousin, Elizabeth Alexander, of Menlo Park, and her cousin's children and grandchildren. A celebration of June's life and interment of ashes will be held at Christ Church, Portola Valley on Sunday, February 25 at 3 pm. View the online memorial for June Phelps McKenna Bonfield
