STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Donald T. Barranco, 83, of Dongan Hills, a retired FDNY captain, Korean War veteran and family man who had a gift for telling stories, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

The lifelong Staten Islander was born in Tompkinsville and also lived in Westerleigh and Castleton Corners before settling in Dongan Hills in 1968.

Mr. Barranco graduated from Curtis High School.

A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

Mr. Barranco was an NYPD officer for three years before joining the FDNY, where he had a 41-year career. He began as a firefighter and was promoted to lieutenant and then captain. He retired from Ladder Co. 85 in New Dorp in 1995.

He enjoyed traveling, skiing and visits to Atlantic City.

Mr. Barranco will be remembered as a great husband, father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by his loved ones, family said.

Evelyn, his wife of 52 years, died in 2011.

Surviving are his son, Donald; his daughters, Karen Hession, Diane Capasso and Betsy Barranco; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Sylvester's R.C. Church, Concord. Arrangements include cremation.
