Painter, Educator. He was one of the most well-known Estonian artists of the early 20th-century. He worked in Paris, Italy, Norway, Germany, the Åland islands, as well as his native Estonia. He initially worked in the Art Nouveau style, however, in Paris he encountered Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, and Fauvism. From 1918, his works showed a strong Expressionism influence. He was instrumental in the creation of the Higher Art School "Pallas" in Tartu in 1919 , where was an instructor. His grave is registered as #4364 with the Estonian National Register of Cultural Monuments.
