GEORGE WESLEY BUCHANAN, Sr. Ph.D., Litt.D., D.S.L.

Professor Emeritus of New Testament Studies, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC. Author of more than 20 books and 100 articles and conference papers on both testaments of scripture, theology, and rabbinic literature. Editor of the Mellen Biblical Commentary Series. Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Biblical Archaeological Review. Known for his innovative perspectives and analyses; in his own words, “an academic hound off the leash,” following trails wherever they led. He was active and well known internationally, including in the Society of Biblical Literature and the Society of New Testament Studies.

Early in his career he pastored five United Methodist churches. As a carpenter and electrician, many times he helped dig out and restore communities after hurricanes on the Gulf coast. He worked long and hard for equal rights for all.

He died peacefully in the Wilson Health Care Center, Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, MD, three weeks before his 98th birthday.
