"Walter A. Bartkowski Sr., 642 Main St., Dickson City, died Sunday in Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville. He was the husband of the former Antoinette Rook, who died Jan. 3, 1991. Born in Dickson City, son of the late Frank and Antoinette Rolka Bartkowski, he was employed as a teacher by the Dickson City and Mid Valley school districts before retirement. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Olyphant, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Dickson City. He played for the County team in the Dream Game in 1938 and was a basketball coach at Dickson City High School. He was a graduate of St. Marys School, Dickson City High School, attended St. Thomas College, and graduated from the University of Scranton. He served with the Army Military Police in Europe during World War II.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Bartkowski, at home; a son, Walt Jr., Olyphant; a brother, Hilary, Dickson City; two sisters, Sister M. Jolanta, Felecan Order, St. Josephs Hospital, Philadelphia, and Helen Myak, Dickson City; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Chester, John, Alex, Stanley, Alfred and Frank; and eight sisters, Lucy Mazur, Lottie Shalkowski, Rose Stash, Frances Krieski, Ann Fedmik, and Wanda, Tessie and Charlotte Bartkowski.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:30 a m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 519 Dundaff St., Dickson City, with Mass at 10 in St. Michael the Archangel Church. Interment, St. Marys Cemetery, Dickson City. Friends may call Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m."
