Mr. Alfano was born in 1931 in Newark, N.J., and graduated from East Side High School in Newark, N.J. He served in U.S. Army during the Korean War from June 1952 to March 1954 and was awarded a Bronze Star. Michael worked as a senior draftsman for General Cable Corporation in Bayonne, N.J., for 30 years. After leaving General Cable, he worked for the US Postal service for several years before retiring. He served as president of the Union High School Band Booster Club from 1975 to 1976.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Alfano; children, Karen Alfano-Painter and her husband, Kevin, Michael Alfano and his wife, Jean, Patricia Alfano and Bruce Alfano and his fiancee, Anne Meyer; and his loving sister, Gloria Vazzano. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Alfano was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Maria (nee Vagliardo) Alfano, and his siblings, Gerard Alfano, Nicholas Alfano, Eleanor Franco, Anna Martucci, Jeannette Neri and Michelina Fasone.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 1212 Kelly St., Union, on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at 10:15 a.m. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Bradley, Haeberle & Barth Funeral Home, 1100 Pine Blvd., Union.
