Clifford Calvin Wright, Sr., 73, of Union City, an outstanding Obion County educator and administrator, died December 9, 1999, at 10 a.m. at his home after an illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, with his son, the Reverend Cliff Wright, Jr., and the Reverend John Archer officiating. Burial will follow in East View Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Bradley, Kenneth Davis, Charles Hutchinson, David Kendall, Dr. Howard Ragsdale, James Sanders, Bill Stephenson and Bill Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Character Builders and Margaret Carter Sunday School classes at Union City First United Methodist Church; teachers and staff at South Fulton Elementary School and the former Rives Elementary School; retired teachers and principals of the Obion County School System; and administrative staff and central office staff of the Obion County School System.

Friends may call at White-Ranson Funeral Home from 6- 9 this evening.

The family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Wright, one of the most well-known and respected of local educators, was born January 10, 1926, in Obion County, son of the late Robert Preston and Clara (Starnes) Wright. He married the former Katherine Cole, March 5, 1950. She survives.

He attended school in Ridgely and received his high school diploma from the former Martin High School. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1960 with a degree in Agriculture and began his teaching career at the former Martin High School, where he taught agriculture briefly before returning to UTM to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He then taught at South Fulton High School. He earned his Master's Degree in Administration from UTM as well and then became principal at the former Rives Elementary School, where he served for 19 1/2 years. He later moved to South Fulton Elementary School, where he retired in December 1991 after 6 1/2 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and was a member of the Obion County-Union City Retired Teachers Association. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church and the Character Builders Sunday School Class. He served his church as an usher.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of almost 50 yeas, include his son and daughter-in-law, Cliff and Amy Wright of Lubbock, Texas; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and David Prentice of Old Hickory; three grandchildren, Adam Wright and Meredith Wright, both of Lubbock, and Justice Prentice of Old Hickory; five sisters, Bobbie Lawrence of Cape Coral, Florida; Dorothy Ellis of Martin; Margie Lane of Jackson; Betty May of Memphis; and Jane Scates of Lexington, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James Wright of Martin.
