David Reinerio Pineda Alvarez, a tow truck operator, was hit and killed while helping a motorist with a flat tire on the night of November 6, 2019.
Alvarez was exiting his vehicle and walking up to the vehicle with the flat tire, which was on the shoulder of the road near Branch Avenue and Coventry Way in Temple Hills, when a driver hit the disabled vehicle, Alvarez and possibly the tow truck, police said.
The tow truck had its lights flashing and was on the shoulder of the road at the time of the crash, police said.
The driver who caused the deadly accident fled the scene. The vehicle involved was found three days later, in nearby Anne Arundel County.
According to AAA-Mid Atlantic, 23 tow truck drivers are killed nationwide each year. Last year, Maryland expanded its Move Over Law to include all service vehicles.
