Beverly Jean Gruber
1934 - 2007
Beverly Jean Gruber July 22, 1934 - July 12, 2007 Greenlawn Mortuary Beverly Jean Gruber was born on July 22, 1934, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, to the late James and Lois Osborne, and went to be with the Lord on July 12, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer. As a child, during the Depression and World War II era, her family lived throughout the United States where her father, James, applied his trade as a Union Welder on a variety of "New Deal" construction projects. Years later, her parents often joked that by age 5, Beverly spoke with a colorful combination of New England and Southern accents as a result of the family's temporary residence in those regions. After arriving in Bakersfield in the 1940's, Beverly attended both Beardsley Elementary and Jr. High schools, and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1953. In 1954, Beverly met her future husband, Jay, at a barbecue hosted by a common friend in Delano, CA. The two were married in 1956 and their son, John, was born in 1966. During the first years of their marriage, Beverly and Jay lived in several San Joaquin valley towns, including Hanford, Tulare, and Visalia, before permanently settling in Bakersfield in 1967. Beverly worked primarily in the private sector until the early 1970s when she accepted a position with the Kern County Conservator's office. Several years later, she transferred into a promotional position with the Kern County Sheriff's Department. She retired from this position in 1997. Beverly possessed a sweet disposition and a great sense of humor, and loved spending time with her family. She was a self-described 'book worm' and had interests in a variety of topics as evidenced by her diverse, and large, personal book collection. She was also an avid gardener, and often applied her artistic drawing and design talents in her many gardening projects. Beverly is preceded in death by Jay, her husband of 49 years; and parents, Lois and James Osborne. She is survived by her son, John and daughter- in-law, Sherrie; grandchildren, Ryan and Sydney; sister, Marilyn Mobley and her husband, Grant; brother, James Osborne and his wife, Jean; and several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude for the professional and conscientious care provided by the staff of Glenwood Gardens, Odyssey Hospice, and UCLA Medical Center. A private graveside ceremony has been requested for family and close friends only. No viewing hours are scheduled.
