Victim of the first in the series of shark attacks that terrorized the shores of New Jersey. Vansant was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a broker with Philadelphia's Folwell Brothers Brokerage Firm. Vansant took a train from West Philadelphia to Beach Haven. It is there that he was attacked by a shark while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.Vansant died from a severed femoral artery. More shark attacks would occur that July 4th week of 1916.This incident inspired the book "Jaws" to be written.
