GAITHER
DIED IN MEXICO
Mr. Morton Gaither Succumbs to Typhus Fever This Week.
Saturday night Col. E. H. Gaither received a telegram announcing the serious
illness from typhus fever of his son, Mr. Morton Gaither, in Mexico City,
Mexico, On Monday morning another telegram came, telling of his death Sunday
night. Mr. Gaither was 37 years old and went to Mexico in 1902 and was for some
time a civil engineer on the Mexican Central Railway. He engaged not only in his
profession, but took large contracts of several kinds and amassed a fortune,
owning a number of business houses in Mexico City and other real estate. He was
also the owner of a large hacienda, containing about 2,300 acres, on which he
was installing a large dairy plant. Last week a letter came from him saying he
was in perfect health, so the attack was evidently sudden. The deceased was a
graduate of Kentucky University, and honor man and president of his class. He
was here on a visit to his parents two years ago. He is survived by his wife,
who was Miss Kate Mahoney, of Port Arthur, Ontario, and a child two months old.
His brothers, Messrs. Ike and Edgar Gaither, are also in Mexico, but it is not
known if they were at their brother's bedside when he passed away. Mr. Gaither
was a splendid young man, energetic in his profession and successful in business
and his many friends here learned of his death with regret. His parents, Col.
and Mrs. E. H. Gaither, have the sympathy of the whole community. Besides his
parents, and the two brothers mentioned above, he is survived by two sisters,
Misses Emily and Elizabeth Gaither. He was interred in the National cemetery in
Mexico City. Mr. Gaither would have been 36 (?) years of age in June.
