Enlisted 4/27/1864 at Covington, Alleghany County, VA., he was mustered into Captain John H. Hughes' Company, Virginia Reserves, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company C, 10th Battalion, Virginia Reserves.)
Noted on only Roll as "Has no horse, does not wish to go in mounted service."
During the last Quarter of 1864, he served in Company E, of the temporary 3rd (Chrisman's) Battalion Infantry.
Hospitalized 10/15 - 11/8/1864 for haemoptysis (coughing up of blood or blood-stained mucus from the bronchi, larynx, trachea, or lungs) in Stuart Hospital, Richmond.
Listed on clothing Receipt Roll with issue dates of 12/11 & 18/1864.

On 7/23/1928, age 85, he successfully applied for a Confederate Soldier's Pension due to "Old age, was wounded in war."

The 10th Battalion, Virginia Reserves (4th Battalion, Valley Reserves) was organized August 23, 1864, with 5 companies, A-E. It was mustered out February 27, 1865.
