Maria Koepcke was a German ornithologist known for her work with Neotropical bird species. Koepcke was a well-respected authority in South American ornithology in a time when the field was largely dominated by men and her work is still referenced today. Maria died in a plane crash on Christmas Eve, 1971. She was on Lansa Flight 508 with her daughter, Juliane, but lighting struck the wing and the plane crashed in the Amazon Rainforest. 14 people, including Maria and her daughter Juliane, survived the impact, but everyone (except Juliane) died of their injures. Juliane was saved 11 days later, and it was confirmed that she was the only survivor.
