His widow spelled his first name Reid. That was struck from the application submitted for his headstone and written in red over it was Reed. The aforementioned widow being Nancy Griscom, whom he married in Galveston, Texas in 1871. The 1860 census states Reid, and he must have told the man how to spell it. The census has him living with a farmer named Vincent Brooks. This may have been because Reid's father, Joseph, had died in 1857 and his mother, Mary Janetta Catherine Brooks Nuckols, died in 1847, when Reid was an infant. During the war Nuckols served with Martin's Battery. They were part of the 12th Virginia Light Artillery.
