The census has him living with a farmer named Vincent Brooks. This may have been because Reid's father, Joseph, had died in 1857 and his mother, Mary Janetta Catherine Brooks Nuckols, died in 1847, when Reid was an infant. During the war Nuckols served with Martin's Battery. They were part of the 12th Virginia Light Artillery.
