Charles L. Perkins, Sr., 82, of Kennesaw died Thursday, April 2, of cancer.

Mr. Perkins was mainly known as the owner and operator of a chain of dry cleaners and coin-operated laundry stores throughout Georgia during the 1950s and 1960s, the family said.

Mr. Perkins was born on July 17, 1915, in Clarks, La. In 1942, he not only graduated from Georgia Tech, but also married his wife Evelyn, the family said. Mrs. Perkins had met her husband at school where she worked in the cafeteria, James Perkins said.

Through his participation in ROTC at college, Mr. Perkins entered the Army during World War II as a second lieutenant, serving in North Africa, Italy and Germany.

Mr. Perkins was discharged from the Army in 1949 as a major after receiving a severe injury to his army in an auto accident at Fort Stewart.

During the time Mr. Perkins owned the laundry chain, he was very active with the Georgia Launderers Association and was president of the organization for two years in the 1960s, the family said.

According to John Perkins, his father would use the annual GLA convention -- located on Jeckell Island -- for the family's vacation while his children were growing up.

Retirement wasn't easy for Mr. Perkins to adjust to at first. After selling the laundry chain, Mr. Perkins continued to work odd jobs to occupy himself, John Perkins said.

Then, in the mid 1970s, Mr. Perkins taught himself to rebuild and restore Jaguars, his favorite car, James Perkins said. This hobby eventually occupied the remainder of his retirement, he said.

Mr. Perkins and his wife also traveled frequently, especially to the southwest U.S. where the couple enjoyed collecting Native American artifacts, James Perkins said.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw, with the Rev. Jim Turrentine officiating. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn H. Perkins; three sons, Jonathan David Perkins of Kennesaw, Charles L. Perkins Jr. of Stone Mountain and James W. Perkins of Atlanta; two daughters, Scharlotte E. Perkins of Marietta and Jacqueline D. Piper of Atlanta; one brother, W. B. Perkins of Winnsboro, La.; one sister, Julia Brown of Shreveport, La.; and five grandchildren.
