Helen Calles, 77, formerly a 35-year resident of Orange, Calif., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, of complications from her battle with cancer.

Helen was born in Lenoir, the oldest of four children. She graduated from Lenoir High School and went on to Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps, and served at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital. A year later, she was transferred to Mare Island, Calif., where she met the love of her life, Gil Calles. In July of this year, they celebrated their 54 years of marriage.

She received degrees in sociology and a teaching credential in nursing education from UCLA. Helen was president for two years of the Catholic Nurses Organization. During her 15-year membership with the California State Nurses Association, she served as secretary for two years. She was active as a volunteer R.N. to the Asheville Christian Ministry as well as working in the program Meals on Wheels.

After years of working as an R.N. at various hospitals in the Orange County area, Helen taught pre-nursing for the Anaheim Unified School District. Upon her retirement, she relocated with her husband to Asheville.

Helen, a devout Roman Catholic, was very active serving on various committees at the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Asheville. She was nominated and accepted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy of the United States. She will be appointed in October 2004 to the position of Lady Commander.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters; a son; a grandson; a granddaughter; a sister; a brother; and a son-in-law.

Helen’s faith in God gave her strength and purpose during the course of her rich and fulfilling life. She was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In celebration of her life, a Rosary vigil as held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange.

A Mass was celebrated at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Holy Family Cathedral with interment immediately following at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.
