Dorothy attended Dodd College in Shreveport, Louisiana, on a scholarship and received her associates degree. She married her childhood sweetheart, Lewis James Lewellen, in January of 1945. He preceded her in death in May of 1988. Together they raised two children, Richard B. Lewellen and Linda (Sue) Hulme, both of Houston.
Dorothy is survived by her niece, Virginia Tilleux Hagen, her sister-in-law, Almeda Kihneman, her children and their spouses (Jean Lewellen and Robert Hulme), grandchildren, Logan Lewellen (Janene), Laura Lewellen Heard (Edward), Edgar Vinueza (Kristin), Ivan Vinueza (Liz) Melinda Hulme Taylor and Jonathan Hulme, as well as seven grandchildren and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life.
For most of her life, Dorothy devoted herself to the nurturing of her family. She was a “stay-at-home mom,” always there in whatever capacity was needed. After her relationship with the Lord, She put her family first. She was an active member of Houston’s First Baptist Church for many years until her health prevented her from attending. She accompanied her daughter and son-in-law to Lincoln Wood Baptist Church after she was unable to drive.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from ten until eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 29th of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service is to commence at eleven o’clock in the morning following the visitation. Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
The family will gather for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
