Spouse Joan Abeln--Her Second Husband
Melvin Abeln, 80, had gift for fixing things
If friends and family wanted something repaired -- cars, gadgets, furniture -- they knew to let Melvin Abeln take a crack at it. If Mr. Abeln couldn't fix it -- which was rare -- owners would chuck the item in the trash without thinking twice.
"People knew if he couldn't fix something, it just couldn't be fixed, " said Patricia Robinson, a daughter from Erlanger.
Melvin J. Abeln, 80, of Edgewood, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday at Woodcrest Manor Care Center, Erlanger.
His skillfulness led him to a career as an electrician and heating and cooling mechanic with Arc Electric in Newport.
Mr. Abeln also was a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood and Crosley Automobile Club. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His first wife, Mary Catherine Abeln, died in 1989.
A project Mr. Abeln undertook in the early 1950s epitomized his two greatest loves: his handiwork and his family. Working nights and weekends, he erected a six-room ranch house with a finished basement in less than two years.
"Sometimes, dad would have this look like he was daydreaming, but he was actually thinking of projects" said his daughter. "He was truly a brilliant man."
Much as Mr. Abeln loved his work, he never let it keep him from his family.
Dinners were especially important. After he phoned home at the end of each workday, his family would start preparing the meal.
"Eating with the family was very important, both to him and to us, " Mrs. Robinson said. "It wasn't dinner if he wasn't there."
Other survivors include his wife, Joan W. Abeln; sons, Jack E. Abeln of Fort Wright and Michael Berberich of Hebron; daughters, Kathleen Bason of Dover, Del., Susan Berberich of Louisville, Terri Schroeder of Fort Mitchell, Alice Schmidt of Taylor Mill and Jenny Caudell of Sparta; a brother, Earl Abeln of Fort Wright; a sister, Lorraine Von Handorf of Fort Wright; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
