Following the death of his first wife, William Clift Winters, was a very lonely man. He remembered his former neighbor, Harriett A.(Garner) Jones, in Prentiss County, MS. Harriett's first husband, William Toliver JONES I, had not returned from the Civil War.
So he mounted his donkey and rode from Langford's Cove to Baldwin, Prentiss County, MS. When William Clift arrived in Baldwin, he found that Harriett had gone to Texas.
He was a very determined and lonely man so he mounted his donkey, crossed the Mississippi River again and rode to Fannin County, TX. There he found and married Harriett A. (Garner) Jones. Before 1880 William Clift brought Harriett and her two youngest children--James Henry "Jim" JONES and Martha Ann JONES to Langford's Cove which was later named Evant.
