The USS Cyclops was lost at sea in March 1918, probably due to being overloaded and structural failure. No trace of the ship was ever found. This marker is a cenotaph.Folk Figure. Beggs was a Electrician Second Class on the U.S.S. Cyclops (a collier). The ship disappeared somewhere between Barbados and Virginia in March, 1918. The ship carrying 306 people including enlisted men and passengers was never heard from again. US Navy - Electrician 2C
Lost at sea aboard the U.S.S. Cyclops in the Bermuda Triangle in March, 1918. He joined the Navy in 1912 and served aboard the USS Michigan; reenlisted 23 Nov 1916 in Birmingham, Al. and was assigned to the USS Cyclops. He was single and affiliated with the Presbyterian church.

Son of John Philip Beggs 1862-1925 and Amy Cleyers Etter Beggs 1867-1965, 1325 North 24th Street, Birmingham, Al. He was one of five children and the only son of this family.

1):Mary Etter Beggs, 12 Aug 1890-Apr 1985 m. Robert James Wheeler (atty & judge) 30 Dec 1878-Jan 16 1957. burial unknown. They lived and died in Birmingham, AL.
2):Martha Virginia Beggs, 1892-1987, m. Vann Sloss Elliott 18 Jun 1891-24 Oct 1979. Martha became the famous portrait artist, "M.Vann Elliott". She and her daughter are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Panama City, Bay, FL. Vann is buried at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Al.
3): Hamilton Beggs is the 3rd child, 1895-1918. Lost at sea.
4): Flora Elizabeth Beggs 14 Mar 1904-10 Aug 1990, m. William D. Sullivan 23 Jan 1905-18 Jan 1997, buried Oaklawn Cemetery, Jacksonville, Fl.
5): Helen Cecelia Beggs 28 Mar 1906-23 Dec 1979 m. Greydon Allen Rhodes 5 Apr 1903-29 Jul 1987. Burial unknown. They lived and died in Darien, Fairfield Co., CT.


Hamilton's grandfather, Hamilton Thompson Beggs, was from Liverpool, England and was a pioneer in the foundry and machine shop industry in Birmingham, Al. He founded Beggs Foundry, which later became American Cast Iron and Pipe Company (ACIPCo). Several of the Beggs family are buried in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Al.
