He served as President of Palau on two separate occasions, the first being a brief period from June 30, 1985 to July 2, 1985 following the assassination of President Haruo Remeliik, and again from August 20, 1988 to January 1, 1989, following the death of President Lazarus Salii in office. He also served as Vice President of Palau from October 25, 1985 to August 20, 1988. Palau is an island in the western Pacific. His son Thomas Jr., served as president for two terms in the 21st century.
