US Senator, US Ambassador. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Florida in the United States Senate from 1975 until 1980. Born to a Jewish family, he attended Harvard University and later received his law degree from Columbia University Law School. After being admitted to the bar, he practiced in Miami and later served in the Florida State Senate from 1967 until 1970. He served as Florida's Secretary of State from 1970 to 1974. He succeeded Edward Gurney as US Senator from Florida and during his term, he assisted President Jimmy Carter with peace talks between Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at Camp David in 1978. He was unsuccessful for reelection to the Senate and later served as Ambassador at Large and Special Envoy to Central America from 1983 to 1984 and US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark from 1992 to 1993.
