When Cal arrived in Vietnam 15 April 1968, he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participaing in Operation Linn River with Golf Company operating 5 kilometers south of Hill 55 and 6 kilometers northeast of the Liberty Bridage. Golf Company made contact with hostile forces and called for supporting fire on the hostile forces. The 81 MM mortar rounds fell short of their target, hit and killed 5 Marines and wounded others. Cal died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body and head from friendly mortar fire.

Sellersburg Marine Killed in Viet Action
A 19 year old Sellersburg area Marine was killed in action in Vietnam, according to word received by his parents from the Defense Department.
Cpl. Cal Tom Hammack, son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Graf, Box 166, R 1, Sellersburg, died Jan, 29 in Quang Nam Province of multiple framentation wounds to the head and body received from friendly mortar fire during an operation against enemy forces.
Corporal Hammack was serving as squad leader and was at the point of his unit when it made contact with hostile forces, according to the Defense Department. As the battle grew in intensity, Hammack's superior called for mortar fire to protect his men against the enemy on slaught and the sqad leader was struck by mortar fragments in the ensuing fire.
Hammack attended St. Pauls's Parochial School and Silver Creek High School and entered the Marines in September of 1966. He underwent basic training at Paris Island in South Carolina and had been serving in Vietnam for the past nine months.
A member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Hammack is also survived by his wife, Karen, who is living in Laconia, IN; three brothers, Stanley W. Hammack, Stationed with the Marines in San Diego, and Michael N. Hammack and Lawrence R. Graf, both of Sellersburg.
The body will be brought to the Haas Funeral Home in Sellersburg.
