John Cecil Crittenden was the son of Henry Valentine Crittenden and Edith Colleen Lucas Crittenden. He married Mary Scott Walrod on 15 July 1969 in Burkeville, Virginia. Their children were Elizabeth Lucas Crittenden ( Born on 22 November 1975 ) and Charles Henry Crittenden ( Born on 5 July 1977 ). As a child he lived and was raised in Crewe, Virginia. John attended Crewe High School and played football while there. Upon graduation from high school John went to the University of North Carolina where he majored in Health and Physical Education. He graduated in August 1970. He became a member of the Halifax High School staff (South Boston, Virginia). He taught and coached football at the school. After a long career there he moved to Richmond, Virginia where he was a member of the Mechanicsville High School staff. A short time after retirement he and his wife moved to Marietta, Georgia where their son lived.
