The Passing of James L. Grisham

"Whereas I was blind, now I see," comes as a joyous echo message from Heaven to those bowed in the loneliness and sorrow of separation from James L. Grisham; he who was so long blind and feeble, is now freed from blindness and pain for he has joined the great company of the saints above who have the Father's name written in their foreheads.

Few friends in Hamilton knew of the serious illness last week of this dear old man whom every one loved for his gentle disposition and cheery greeting. He had been feeble for a long while but was stricken in the last illness on Monday and passed away last Saturday morning, June 12, [1926] at 7:00 o'clock. He was born in Tippah County Mississippi, December 29, 1849. He was married in that state to Miss Margaret Jones, who after fifty-two years of happy companionship is left in loneliness to await her summons to the reunion in the home where there is no more parting. Nine children blessed this union, one of whom died in infancy. The surviving sons and daughters were all present when the end came to the earth life of the beloved father. The sons are William, Charles, Jess, and Virgil Grisham of Blue Ridge; Lem Grisham of Quanah, Texas. The daughters are Mrs. Ida Fergusson of Lund Valley community; Mrs. Addie Lassiter, Elgin, Oklahoma; Mrs. Emma Williams, Blue Ridge. There are thirty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Grisham came to Hamilton County in 1880 and settled in Langford's Cove. Some two years later he bought the farm on Blue Ridge where he was living when the summons came. Since his boyhood days he had been a member of the Missionary Baptist church and was one of the charter members of the Blue Ridge church. He was a good man, faithful, loyal, and a man of integrity in every relation of life. His family loved him devotedly and his memory will ever be one of their sweetest portions of life's blessings. His life counted for much as a church member and as a neighbor and as a citizen of the county, the state, the nation. In every particular his sons, grandsons, and great grandsons will find his life worthy of emulation.

The funeral service was held in Blue Ridge Baptist Church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. B. F. White and attended by a large gathering of relatives and friends. Burial was made in the Murphree Cemetery near Evant, where his little one had ben laid to rest years before. Rev. S. A. Rains lead the impressive commitment ceremonies.

May God in His Love and mercy comfort those who mourn in loneliness and the waiting for the reunion.

James Lemuel Grisham, Sr. was a son of Andrew Jackson Grisham, Sr. and Gillie Olive (Mason) Grisham. He married Margaret Amanda Jones on 7 Nov., 1872, Prentiss County, MS. According to the death record filed in Hamilton County, TX, for James Lemuel, he was buried in the "Live Oak Grave Yard," but he was buried in the Murphree Cemetery as verified by pictures made of his interment, his tombstone, the obituary above, and by family tradition. As a child I attended many "cemetery workings" with my parents and maternal grandparents, because James Lemuel Grisham, Sr. and his widow, Margaret Amanda Jones Grisham were buried at Murphree near the grave of Margaret's mother and step-father--Harretta (Jones) Winters and William Cliff Winters.--Elreeta Weathers
