Mae Poythress Pulliam was born to Xury and Ann Eliza Pulliam of Uvalde, Texas. She was the fifth child of seven children. The family migrated from Uvalde, TX, to Marfa, TX and settled in El Paso, TX in the early 1900s.
Mae received a teaching degree and taught at Highland Park and Lamar schools in El Paso. She married Wylie Elmer Casteel of Arkansas on June 9, 1917. They had three children, Martha, Wylie Jr, and Jacqueline.
She passed away in 1949.
