Lower Burrell
Nick Abate, 90, of Lower Burrell, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in his home. He was born March 3, 1916, in Tinsmill, Bell Township, Westmoreland County, to the late Nicola and Rosaria (Pitrone) Abate, and had lived in Lower Burrell since 1954. He had previously resided in Avonmore and Tintown. A coal miner his entire life, he worked for various coal mines retiring from the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company in Indiana, Pa. He also worked for Union Spring Foundry in Lawrenceville. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, Lower Burrell, the UMWA and the USWA. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, hunting and time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Rose A. (Catania) Abate; a daughter, Rosemarie (James) Scheller, of Ohio Township; a son, David L. (Debra) Abate, of Lower Burrell; five grandchildren, Jeff (Carrie) Scheller, Craig (Tricia) Scheller, Steven (Cletus) Abate and Anthony and Leanne Abate; seven great-grandchildren, Osric and Calliope Abate, Dustin, Riley, Larson, Olivia and Marissa Scheller. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Nicholas Abate; two brothers, Joseph and Emilio Abate; and three sisters, Grace Scarcella, Jane Burin and Carmella DiFranco. Friends will be received after 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road at Alder Street, Lower Burrell. Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Margaret Mary Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park Mausoleum, Lower Burrell.
