James L. Rice, 50, of 5240 Romany Dr., freshman English teacher and assistant varsity basketball coach at Whitmer High School, died of a heart ailment Sunday in his home.

Mr. Rice taught at Whitmer eight years, and was adviser to the junior high dramatics club. He directed several school players and other dramatic activities at Whitmer and was formerly active in the Village Players and Toledo Repertoire Theater.

Mr. Rice was named assistant varsity basketball coach two years ago, after having served as freshman and reserve basketball coach at Whitmer. He had been a supervisor at city pools during the past several summers.

Mr. Rice moved to Toledo 10 years ago from Springfield, Mo., where he had also taught English and had been active in dramatics. During his first two years in the city, he did investigative work for the former law firm of Cubbon and Rice, of which his late brother, Bernard, was a perter. He continued to work for the firm on a part-time basis until a year ago.

Surviving are his wife, Carol A.; son, James B.; daughter, Janine [sic]; sister, Mrs. Naomi Thomas; half-sister, Janet Rice; and father, the Rev. Ralph E. Rice, a retired minister of the Church of the Nazerene, in Bourbonnais, Ill.
