According to transcribed baptism and birth records, John Chalmers was born to Margaret Ferguson and William Chalmers on 5 April 1802, and was baptised on 5 June 1802 in Kinnoull, Perth, Scotland.

Transcribed marriage records are found for a John Chalmers and "Mey" Walker, who married on 9 March 1827 in Perth.

Records for two children born of May Walker and John Chalmers are found: John Chalmers, Jr was born 15 June 1829 and was baptised on 28 June 1829 in Perth, and Elizabeth Chalmers was born 16 May 1831 and was baptised on 5 June 1831 in Perth.

There is also a transcribed marriage record for a John Chalmers and Janet Ferguson, who married 23 May 1834, also in Perth.

Transcribed records of the 1841 Scotland Census indicate that there was a "Mason & Vinter" (wine merchant) named John Chalmers living on South Street in Perth, with his wife Janet and their family as follows:

head, John Chalmers, age 30 (likely a transcription or clerical error), born in Perthshire
wife, Janet Chalmers, age 40, born in Perthshire
son, John Chalmers, age 10, born in Perthshire
daughter, Isabella Chalmers, age 4, born in Perthshire
daughter, Mary Chalmers, age 2, born in Perthshire
daughter, Margaret Chalmers, age 4 months, born in Perthshire
F.S. (perhaps a mis-transcribed D.S., for domestic servant?), Janet McIntosh, age 14, born in Perthshire

The same family, with their address now identified as 234 South Street in Perth, is found in transcribed records of the 1851 Scotland Census as follows:

head, John "Chalmiers", mason, age 48, born in Perth
wife, Janet "Chalmbers", age 48, born in Perth
son, John Chalmers, mason, age 11 (almost certainly a clerical or transcription error), born in Perth
daughter, Isabella Chalmers, scholar, age 14, born in Perth
daughter, Mary Chalmers, scholar, age 12, born in Perth
daughter, Margaret Chalmers, scholar, age 10, born in Perth
*lodger, James "Fargerson", hand loom weaver, age 77, born in Mosice (?), Perthshire.

*this is possibly a relative from the Ferguson side of the family. John's second wife Janet is a Ferguson, and his mother's maiden name is Ferguson).

In the early 1840s, John Chalmers is recorded in the Electoral Registers of Perth and Kinross as a mason living on South Street, but by 1859 he is listed as a vinter, and living on York Place as a tenant of a public house, or inn and stables.
