Father: William Watkins--as per Hamilton County Death Records

Another Confederate Veteran Summoned Home

The Herald-Record is deeply pained that it has again become our duty to chronicle the death of a beloved old soldier of the South. G. L. Watkins, a loyal southerner and a well loved, chivalrous gentleman was taken home to God last Tuesday at about 4 o'clock; dissolution occurring at the family home in the Blue Ridge Community.

Mr. Watkins was in town last Saturday and while a little feeble, none of his friends thought the earthly separation so near at hand. He did not linger to suffer many hours for God took him. He was a good man, a conscientious member of the Primitive Baptist Church and a citizen whose staunch adherence to principle right never swerved from the mark of his calling. He was a familiar figure on Hamilton streets, having dwelt in the county for some thirty years. He was a member of Albert Sidney Johnston Camp, U C V and always enjoyed meeting with his comrades. He was jovial, genial and liberal in his views and charitable to all. Besides his host of friends, Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife and several children.

Funeral services were held at the Little Cowhouse Cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Many friends from Hamilton attended the services and paid a last tribute of respect to the hero of the sixties. Tenderest sympathy is expressed for all those who mourn his departure to that land where there is not more sorrow, but eternal light and joy.
