CASTLE ROCK, Wash. Harold Lloyd Bern Jr. died March 27, 2019, at the age of 75.

He was born May 4, 1943, in Galesburg, Illinois, the first child of Harold Sr. and Dorothy S. (Weinberg) Bern, who preceded him in death. He attended schools in Galesburg and Oneida, Illinois, and graduated from ROVA High School in 1961. He received a bachelor of arts degree in English from Monmouth College, Illinois, in 1966. On Feb. 18, 1966, he married Carol J. McMaster in Wheaton, Illinois. He served in the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and was honorably discharged in 1969 as a First Lieutenant.

He worked in personnel and human resources for over 30 years in Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Alabama, and Washington. He retired in February 2000. In the years after his retirement, he was interested in his heritage and traced his lineage back to the 1700s in Sweden. He became the editor of The Swedish American Genealogist and served in that capacity until he had a stroke in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, Kristine (Terence) Jenkins; a son, Kurtis (Sally) Bern; grandchildren, Micah and Eli Jenkins and Kelsey and Hanna Bern; a brother, Michael (Pat) Bern of Roseville, Illinois; and a sister, Cindi (Mike) Drasites of Avon, Illinois.

The burial will be in Oneida.
