Attended public schools in Vernon, Texas, graduating from high school (at age 16) in May 1936. From 1936-1943 attended The University of Texas, working part-time at the capitol building and as a fry cook at a cafe to make expenses. Graduated with a Batchelor of Business Administration degree. Met Norma Elsie NIX while there and they married on 22 DEC 1942 in her home town of Amarillo, Texas shortly before he entered the U.S.Navy to serve in World War II. Assigned to a destroyer, he served in the South Pacific until honorably discharged in 1945.

Was employed as a professional scouter (Boy Scouts of America) in Austin, Texas 1945-1946 and Taylor, Texas 1947-1948, then as office manager for a relative's car dealorship in Levelland, Texas from 1949-1951 -- (Otis) Burson Motors. Moved to Lubbock, Texas (1951-1954) working as accountant for three successive employers (Brasher & Bollinger, Baldridge Bakery & ???). Returned to Levelland in 1954 as office manager for Stuart Pontiac. Taught sixth grade at South Elementary for one semester (Fall 1957). Resigned at mid-term to run for office and was elected Hockley County Judge in NOV 1958. Worked at a cotton gin to make ends meet while campaigning. Won re-election in 1962 and served as County Judge until 1965, meanwhile earning an LLB degree by correspondence.
He moved to Greenville, Texas that year and began keeping books for a client list of small businesses. In 1968 he rented a store front in nearby Commerce, Texas and "hung out his shingle" for the first time as an attorney. He continued both his law practice and his bookkeeping services until his death on 20 FEB 1970. He died at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Dallas, Texas due to heart and kidney failure caused by the degenerative effects of diabetes mellitus (for which he had been diagnosed in 1960).
