Vocalist. He is remembered for his tenure with the Doo-Wop music group "The Dells." Formed during his years at Thornton High School in Harvey, Illinois, the group was initially named "The El-Rays" and scored their first hit with "Oh, What a Night" which achieved a Top 10 placing on the R&B charts in 1956. He left to briefly sing in the music group "The Moonglow," prior to returning to "The Dells" during the 1960s. For the next fifty years, Barksdale remained a part of their lineup as the group enjoyed commercial success with the hits "There Is" (1968), "Stay In My Corner" (1968) and a revised version of "Oh, What A Night" (1969). Their single "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation" (1973) earned them gold status. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
