Born Betty Kathryn Nehrig, November 23, 1919 in Patton, PA daughter of the late Harry H. and Sara Rowland Nehrig.

She attended public schools in Patton and was graduated from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1941 and subsequently served as a dietician at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.

On February 27, 1943, in Sioux City, Iowa, she married Lt. William J. Castner, who was serving in the 8th Air Force. Thirty-two days later he was deployed to Europe and on July 30, 1943 he was killed in action when his badly damaged B-17, Liberty Bell, crashed attempting to land after a bombing mission over Germany.

Following her first husband's death, she enlisted and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, serving as the Chief Dietician, 173rd General Hospital, Nancy, France.

She then married Willis W. Bryant, Jr. a pilot in the 9th Air Force at Ochey, France, March 2, 1945 at a ceremony performed by the local mayor, remarrying him on September 26, 1945 upon their return to the United States. She and her husband operated a boarding house in Berkeley, California before moving to State College, Pennsylvania in 1948. He died on August 20, 1986.

She was employed as a financial secretary by the Tussey Realty Company, Kissinger & Bryant Insurance and S. Paul Mazza and Associates. She was a member of the Bellefonte Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College.

She enjoyed knitting, drinking percolated coffee, driving a convertible and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle in pen.
