Major League Baseball Player. For nineteen seasons (1978 to 1996), he was a pitcher with the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox and California Angels. Born Scott Douglas Sanderson, he was raised in Illinois where he attended Glenbrook North High School and during his senior year, he helped his baseball team win a state championship (1974). Selected by the Kansas City Royals during the 1974 MLB June Amateur Draft, he would instead enroll at Vanderbilt University where he played collegiate baseball. He was redrafted by the Montreal Expos during the 1977 MLB June Amateur Draft and on August 6, 1978, he made his Major League debut. During his first full season (1979), he split time as a starter and middle reliever, and in 1980 he secured a spot in Montreal's starting rotation which culminated with 16 wins that year. In 1981, he yielded a highly respectable 2.95 ERA and contributed to Montreal's first playoff berth. After he was acquired by the Cubs, he assisted in Chicago's capturing of two divisional crowns (1984 and 1989). While with the Athletics, he experienced a pennant-winning season (1990) and produced a career high 17 wins. The following year (1991) with the Yankees, he achieved all star status. In 472 career regular season games, he compiled a 163 win, 143 loss record with a lifetime 3.84 ERA, in 2,561 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he became a sports agent. He died from cancer.
