John Wesley was born in Salt Springs, Jackson County, Indiana. He was the son of Hiram N. Sowder and Elenor Jane Brown. His mother died when he was about 3-4, and he was raised by his father and step-mother, Nancy (Robertson) Sexton Sowder. Prior to 1880 he migrated with his family to Greenwood County, Kansas, to an area also called Salt Springs. On October 26, 1891 John married Georgia Lou Phillips. They were the parents Leonard Frank, John Edward, and Charles Alfred. The family farmed in the Pleasant Grove area of Greenwood County, then later moved to Toronto, Woodson County, which was nearby.
