Melvin J. Barnett, 86, of Agency Ia, died at 12:25 p.m. August 20, 2015 at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield Ia.
He was born born September 13, 1928 in Blakesburg Ia to Roy Greene and Addie Ann Sample Barnett. He married Dorothy Jean Hinkle on February 21, 1948. She preceded him in death April 25, 2012.
Melvin worked for 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring in 1981. He helped start the First Responders in Agency Is and was with the Agency Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.
Surviving are two sons Daryl (Nancy) Barnett and Russell Barnett both of Ottumwa Ia. Two daughters Jane (John) Yochum; of Batavia Ia and Leanna (Paul) Simpson of Holton KS; a daughter-in-la;w Diana Barnett of Ottumwa Ia; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Barnett; a daughter Judy Johnson; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Frank and Jack Barnett; four sisters, Betty Glosser, Ileta Smith, Irene Slack and Barbara Reinhard.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Deacon Jason Brooks of Calvary Baptist Church in Batavia officiating. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials may be made to the family.
