Dan grew up in Oklahoma and Oregon. He was six years old when the family got their first computer; he was fascinated by it. He played in the Portland Youth Philharmonic and enjoyed touring Germany with them. As a Boy Scout, he earned his Eagle Award. He loved outdoor activities, including going on long biking trips, rafting trips, snow caving, spelunking, water and snow skiing, and camping. The summer before his senior year of high school, he went to a computer camp where he met his future wife, Heather.

His work experiences allowed him to travel to places such as India and China. He and Heather have three children: Paul, Rose and Thomas. Together, they made wonderful memories. They loved to have outdoor adventures, including camping, biking, skiing, geocaching, and hiking. They liked playing games, trying new foods and restaurants, and playing with their gerbils and snake.
