Gladys Faye Beuchat, 98, of Eureka, died Sunday, March 28, 1993, in Wichita.
She was born Feb. 22, 1895, the daughter of Henry August Beuchat and Corah A. Clark. She grew up in the northern part of Greenwood County and attended rural schools in the area. Gladys graduated from Eureka High School in 1913 and began teaching in rural schools of the county. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Emporia State Normal School in 1922. Gladys taught at the Independence High School from 1922 until 1925, when she took a position in El Dorado teaching in the El Dorado High School and the Junior College. She received a Master's Degree from Iowa University in 1936. She remained an instructor in El Dorado for 34 years, retiring in 1960. She spent the first year of her retirement in The Hill Top area of Greenwood County in Shell Rock Township.
She moved to Eureka in 1970. Gladys joined several organizations, including the AAUW, the Pleasant Point Extension Uniot, the Greenwood County Historical Society, and the Greenwood-Elk County Retired Teachers Association. For the past 21 years she has served as treasurer of the Retired Teachers Association and has been a member of the Historical Society since its organization in the early 1970s.
Gladys is survived by several nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ada and Olive.
Funeral services were held March 31, 1993, at the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home. The Rev. Howard Busby of Lamont officiated the ceremony. Burial followed in the Janesville Cemetery at Hamilton.
A memorial has been established in her name with the Greenwood County Historical Society.
