Anthony "Candy" Candela, former fire chief in Wood River, died Monday (July 3, 2000) at Alton Memorial Hospital after suffering a stroke three weeks ago. He was 71 and lived in Wood River. Mr. Candela is credited with modernizing the Wood River Fire Department during his five-year tenure as chief. He took the job in 1974 after working for the department for 21 years.

Mr. Candela helped the department get new equipment and required state certification for its employees, said the current fire chief, Guy Williams. Mr. Candela also started annual fire inspections of the city's businesses. "The whole state was in transition at the time" to create more professional fire departments, Williams said. "Candy was just a little bit ahead of his time."

After retiring in 1979, Mr. Candela worked for the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office, where he received a distinguished service award. He also served in the Army during the Korean War. He met Neta Cox, who became his wife of 48 years, at the Granite City Army Depot.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Candace Candela of East Alton; two sons, Shawn Candela of Webster Groves and Kevin Candela of Godfrey; three sisters, Terry Marra of Las Vegas, Angie Candela of Portland, Ore., and Clare Johnson of Lonedell; and three brothers, Nick Candela and Louie Candela of New York City and Frank Candela of New Jersey.
