Soldier, Gay Rights Figure

Allen R. Schindler, Jr. (Petty Officer Third Class, United States Navy)

Allen's brutal gay-bashing death in Japan by Navy shipmates coincided with the national controversy regarding President Clinton's attempt at an executive order that the armed services stop discriminating on the basis of sexual preference.
The controversial "Don't Ask Don't Tell," a 1993 policy that prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service resulted. It was repealed in 2011.

Schindler's murder and his mother's fight for justice were depicted in the award winning Lifetime Television film "Any Mother's Son: The Dorothy Hajdys Story."
