Author. He was an Estonian writer of the pentalogy "Truth and Justice," which was written between 1926 to 1933, and is considered one of the major works of Estonian literature. It is called the "The Estonian Novel." Comprised of five volumes, "Truth and Justice" was not translated into English until 2014. Born Anton Hansen, he wrote under the name of A. H. Tammsaare. His childhood was poor, yet his father managed to purchase newspapers for reading and to help him to attend University of Tartu to study law. After spending a year in a tuberculosis hospital, he stayed on his brother's farm for six years recuperating. In 1918 after Estonia gained independence, he began to write. He wrote his last novel, "Devil with a False Passport." in 1939 and it became internationally well-respected.
