Derek Allen Orchard 1970 - 2007

Memorial services for Derek Allen Orchard, 37, Overland Park, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at McGilley State Line Chapel in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Feb. 25, 1970, in San Diego, the son of Richard and Georgia Orchard. He grew up in Lawrence, Kan., and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1988. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1992 and earned a Master of Business Administration from Kansas University in 1999. He lived in the Kansas City area, most recently in Overland Park.

Mr. Orchard worked in several marketing positions in the wireless phone industry. He was a member of United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in October. He also was active in his neighborhood association.

A longtime neighbor said she knew him as a good father and, in his high school days, a talented singer, actor and soccer player. She remembers his singing the song "Fire and Rain" at the annual "Showtime" program at LHS and sounding just like James Taylor.
"He's just an amazing person," she said. "He has lots of friends. … I think everyone's stunned."

He married Meghan Golden in 1994. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his parents; a daughter, Carson; two sons, Max and Will; a sister, Libby Orchard Wendorf, North Oaks, Minn.; and a brother, Brian Orchard, Chicago.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan.

The family suggests memorials to the Derek Orchard Memorial Fund at the church, sent in care of McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
