She was born on February 13, 1918, in Algoma, WI, to Martin and Catherine (Laurent) Petersen. Verna attended schools in Lake Forest, IL, graduating from Deerfield High School in 1936. Verna moved to Kenosha in 1939.
On October 21, 1939, she married Alton Andersen in Lake Forest, IL. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1982.
For many years she was a homemaker. In 1960, in partnership with her husband Alton opened A & B Hardware and Lock Shop. She worked there for many years. After retiring she enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, watching sports, especially the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were all stars in her eyes.
Verna is survived by her children, Margaret "Peg" (Bob) Nikolai of Washington Island, WI, Nancy Cannan of Park Fall, WI, and Laurie (Russ) Hackbarth of Kenosha; a sister, Evelyn (Chuck) Stainbrook of South Milwaukee, WI; her eight grandchildren, Bob, Jim and Tom Nikolai, Kristin Mutchler, Gerald Cannan, Suzanne Cornell, and Heather and Heidi Hackbarth; and her fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Richard, Robert and Eugene Petersen.
A prayer service will be held on Sunday, October 29th, at Proko Funeral Home at 7:30 pm. Visitation will be held at Proko Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until the time of service. On Tuesday, October 31st, Funeral services will be held at Bethel Free Church on Washington Island, at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held at church from 9:30 am until the time of the service. Interment to follow at Island Cemetery on Washington Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Bethel Free Church on Washington Island, WI, would be appreciated by the family.
