Confederate Veteran Dies After Illness
John Joseph Covington, 100 year old Confederate veteran and retired farmer, died in Memorial Hospital, Lynchburg, Tuesday morning after an illness of eight weeks.
Born February 24, 1844, in Charlotte County, he was the son of George Covington and Mrs. Elizabeth Thornton Covington. His wife, the former Virgie Woodall, died several years ago. Mr. Covington had lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Covington, in Madisonville for the last 23 years.
Surviving are five other sons, A.F. Covington of Buena Vista, Thornton Covington, Drakes Branch, J.J. Covington, of Coatesville, Pa., J.W. Covington of Vinton, and G.W. Covington of Brookneal; four daughters, Mrs. B.C. Vaughan of South Hill, Mrs. Luther Vaughan of Wellville, Mrs. J.W. Austin of Gladys, and Mrs. D.C. Myers of Madisonville; 36 grand children and 39 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Madisonville Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member, at 11 A.M. this (Thursday) morning. Burial was in the church cemetery.
