Husband of Shirley May (Butler) Pappas
Leo G. Pappas, 90, died in Bonita Springs, Fla., on Saturday, April 8, 2017.
He was born in Ipswich on June 25, 1926 the son of John and Jennie (née Gianakis) Pappas.
Mr. Pappas served with great distinction in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged in September of 1967 after a 20+ year career where he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart for his meritorious actions in December of 1953 when he fought a fire on the C-124 aircraft that he was assigned to. At the risk of his person and life, acted with courage and skill in fighting the fire which threatened to destroy the aircraft.
He served as everyone's favorite bartender while in Goose Bay Labrador and Paine Field in Washington, D.C. During his service and following his discharge, at Cameron's, the Tavern and the Gull Restaurant in Gloucester.
Mr. Pappas was very active in numerous organizations. He was a life member of the 28th. Wing Association, the Air Force Sergeants Association, also of the VFW Post #4254 in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was a member of the American Legion Post #113 in Manchester, Mass., and the Amaral-Bailey Post #113's Post-Auxiliary Squadron, the Order of Ahepa Chapter #419 of Ipswich, a life member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Salem, and of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the A.A.S.R. of Salem and Boston. Mr. Pappas was also of the Aleppo Shriners, the Legion of Honor of the Aleppo Temple of Massachusetts and he was a Knight of the Boston Commandery No. 2 of the Knights Templar of Boston.
Mr. Pappas is survived by his son, Larry Pappas; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Mary-Beth of South Dakota. He is also survived by one brother and one sister, Thomas Pappas of Ipswich and Mary Bona of Beverly, as well as many devoted and loving nieces and nephews, and friends. Mr. Pappas was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers, Helen Stevens, George Pappas, Louis Pappas, Angelo Pappas, Arnold Pappas. Nasha Cardarelli, James Pappas, and Christine Tilas. He was also predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley Pappas.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held Friday, June 23 at 11 a.m. in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Rd., Ipswich, relatives and friends are respectfully invited. There will be no visiting hours.
