Essie Mae Carter Barlow, 68, was born to Mr. & Mrs. Enis & Rose Carter on May 7, 1949 at the Mattie Hersey Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. She went to be with Jesus on Thursday, March 1, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Walter Carter, Meridian, MS, James & Ernest Carter, both of Chattanooga; two sisters, Ollie B. Carter, Sadie Green, both of Chattanooga; one son, Robert E. Barlow, Jr., Chattanooga. Essie joined Mark Common Baptist Church at the age of 9 in Lauderdale, MS. She was active in the church as an usher, choir member and secretary at the age of 16. She graduated from the 9th grade at Howard High School, Chattanooga, TN in 1965 and from high school in May of 1968 at Middleton Attendance Center, Meridian, MS. She moved to New York and attended Bronx Community College of Nursing. She married Robert E. Barlow, Sr. on December 9, 1968 and later moved to Los Angeles, CA. She moved to Chattanooga in 1976 where she made her home. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Michele D. Barlow (Terry) McCullough, Layonda N. Barlow, both of Chattanooga; one brother, Edward Carter, Sr., Chattanooga; two grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 8th 2018 at the Church of First Born. The body will lie in state after 12 noon on March 7th, and the family will receive from 6 – 7 pm at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 622-9995.
