Equilla Reed was born on December 1, 1900, on the Mary Benton Soward family land, in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Both of her parents were farm laborers.

Her father, John Soward, was born in neighboring Lauderdale County, and was a former enslaved person owned by John Eison. Her mother was Mary Benton, who was born free to formerly enslaved parents.

She was her parents only child together, but her father had five children (four girls, and a boy) from a previous marriage, and her mother had one son from a previous relationship.

Equilla married G.W. Williams, in Dyersburg, on December 16, 1917. They had one child together, a daughter, born ten months later.

Equilla married Edward Reed on January 8, 1927, in Lauderdale. Edward was divorced with twin daughters, who resided in Caruthersville, Missouri, across the Mississippi River from Dyersburg.

Edward and Equilla Reed settled in Dyerbsurg, and had three daughters. Edward and Equilla separated, and Equilla and her three daughters with Ed moved from Dyersburg to Evansville, Indiana, in 1935.

In 1936, Equilla and the three daughters moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Equilla's oldest daughter joined them from Dyersburg.

Equilla would have to more children from two different relationships, another daughter, and a son. Equilla would eventually be hospitalized in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, where she would pass away on November 26, 1964. She was buried in Milwaukee in Glen Oaks Cemetery.
